Our weekend at Gabriola was a bit temperamental in the weather department but fun nonetheless. Oscar caught and ate more field mice:

The kids sheltered themselves from the sometimes rain, sometimes snow in a makeshift teepee. They had a perfect view of the work site from here.

At one point I saw Lily down the hill at the fire quite a ways away from where we all were. I wondered what she was up to.

Apparently she was making swords, much like a blacksmith would. Living at Fort Steele years back she’s had the opportunity to see blacksmith at work. She even saw a friend making a sword over the summer in the shop (Hey D!).

She put the wood into the HOT fire and then blew out the flame. Then she would take it over to the chopping block to form the blade.

Rather than hit it like a blacksmith would to metal, she scraped the burnt sides off to make a point. This was great fun, despite how serious she was taking this task.

This morning we had a lovely breakfast but the weather continued to get worst and we weren’t able to go back out to the property. Just the dad’s ended up going to get a half days work in.

It’s good to be home!

Looks like a lovely weekend. But of a contrast to mine – in hospital. Oh well!

lily is the cutest making her sword. looks to me she has a natural skill in it. smart little gal and very creative using the materials that were available.

  5. What a good example of living by learning! I can only imagine where the discussion went afterwards. That’s so great that you have the photos for documentation. It was nice of you to share them but I’m sure Lily will love looking back on this in years to come. My mom caught my little sister doing yard work in her leotard, tutu and gumboots. It’s a family favourite all these years later.

I love these moments and feel lucky to catch them because sometimes I do or it wouldn’t be “right” to try and take a picture, yk? I can’t wait for my kids to grow up but it makes me sick to see how fast they’re really doing it. I want to just live in every moment and enjoy it…. *sigh*

    What a clever girl!

It looks like it was a fun-filled weekend. Sometimes weird weather can make for the best experiences.
