I thought I’d break up my post about our recent trip to our property into two- inside and out. It was cold enough outside that we spend quite some time cozying up in front of the cookstove.
Our first supper was eaten over candle and propane lights. We had bison burgers, which I bought on a whim because they seemed less processed (non medicated etc.) than bought veggie burgers which we planned for a very quick first meal. I have to admit they were a bit too meaty for me. I ate it but didn’t want to talk or think about it while I was doing it. An extra glass of wine helped wash it all down.
Leif and Cam having a little fun with Hayden’s toys. Seriously, this kid is crazy. He wanted to wear the cups like a hat and it took Cam a few minutes to figure that out. This picture was his idea. Why are my kids such posers?!
Keith spent some time tying flies in the evening. There wasn’t much fish in the water during our stay thanks to super clear water with fallen leaves intermittently floating on top but it was still worth a try. Steelhead Salmon are coming into season now.
There was a ton of drawing and colouring done when we were inside. Lily’s colouring a lot more detailed pictures and Leif is more interested in trying different colours next to each other. He loves green and yellow especially!
Lily’s really into castles right now. I actually think my embroidery is inspiring some of her creations. Look how she’s drawn roses on each picture.
I was really surprised at how quickly I finished this embroidery. I mentioned before that this project was being made into a crown for Lily. I’ve done embroidery on clothes I’ve made and sometimes to embellish older clothes I’ve bought. When I decided I wanted to make a crown for Lily I wasn’t really prepared with the right tools to do it. I decided to just use what I had, which was regular sewing needles and this light canvas material. I had Cam make me a quick rectangle frame and went at it.
Before picking this project up again, I bought some embroidery needles and it really made the work a lot easier. I just need to decide what I want to do now. I’ve had a number of ideas of what I can do with this. I’ve considered trying to dye the canvas without dying the thread. Not sure about that though. I originally want to mount this on felt and maybe it would look all right if the felt was also a more natural simple colour? I’m going to give it some thought and am open to thoughts and advice!
We ate some pretty delicious meals. I posted my meal plan here. It’s quite dark in the cabins at night so I didn’t get to take too many shots. Here’s a couple from a squash curry that my friend Erin made for everyone.
Our trip overlapped with a cousin’s. This gave Cam and Mike the opportunity to replace the big single paned window in the cabin with a new double paned one we brought up with us. It was a perfect fit!
Inside might not be as exciting as out- at least in pictures but it felt just as important to me. I had a chance to work on some knitting, writing, reading and even sleeping (!). Even though we were with friends, it often felt like a great trip for self reflection and quiet.
Stay tuned for Outside Our Autumn Escape!
your hand work is really nice! wow. I think I like the white background- it makes the colors pop. Maybe backing it with a neutral or a black felt would be nice. If you are looking for some really nice felt check out Heather Bailey’s line- she just started to carry some really nice colors.
hope all is well!
Leif is looking like such a boy, not a baby anymore!
Your embroidery is beautiful! I agree it would look wonderful with a similarly-natural felt backing. :-)
This sounds like such a relaxing and rejuvenating time! How lovely!
Cheers!

Beautiful embroidery… I love it when I see the things I have been working on show up in the kids projects! I guess that is a wonderful reflection of the video you posted on Facebook! The other side of the coin!
That pic of the two of them together is adorable!
Thanks for sharing… looking forward to the outdoors!
I think your embroidery is just absolutely beautiful. I’m just starting to learn how and seeing yours is very inspiring. Lovely.
