I always pursue the parenting section at the used bookstores I go to. Imagine my thrill when looking in the cover of this infamously horrible book to see the price of $2.50. Imagine my further exhilaration to find another with a price of $2.00.

Sold.

I’ll admit my husband and I had a bit too much fun dispatching (with extreme prejudice) this book.

Just one article about the dangers in following the advice in this awful book.

  1. What a hoot! And in the snow no less. How on earth did you become familiar with such a book in the first place?

When we went book shopping in your town we found so much more than what we find here. I love that people will consider sharing their old titles – it is so hard to find recognizable books here, even the bad ones!

  2. paxye says:

What a perfect ending to those books… it is so scary that people actually follow them…

Sophia… Babywise is somewhat legendary in the natural parenting world… it is such the extreme opposite…

  3. Katey says:

I’ve done that before too! Well, not burn it, but rip it up and put it through the shredder. Totally worth every penny! I hide in when I come across it in bookstores.

  4. Krista says:

I haven’t seen this one, but I am wracked with sadness knowing there are thousands of hideous “baby and child” books out there on the store shelves, both new and used stores… AND the library. I am SO impressed that you would think to buy them to burn them, I wish we could buy them all…. Thanks for doing your part!

  5. Krista says:

Maybe we could put our heads together and come up with a “worst top 50” list or something. Then people would know what to look for. I cry when I read some of the abusive stuff in these books being toted as “the right way to parent….”.

  6. Annie says:

L- We have really great stores here. It’s a surprise you wouldn’t have the same where you are!

Katey- I hide them too in new bookstores. We have a fire pit in our yard so why not burn it. Ha. Much more fun!

I can’t believe this book is still sold. If I still had a copy (ha), I type out some of the “best” parts. It’s a truly heinous book.

I like your idea, Krista. I had thought about doing a post of the worst parenting books but was a bit overwhelmed with how many their are… Babywise is one of the worst but there are less obviously awful books like the Baby Whisperer for just one example. I love the idea of compiling a list to share.

  7. Thanks for filling me in everyone. I must be the only non-mama reading over here!

  8. Penelope says:

    Baaaahahahahahaaaa! I love it!

  9. Krista says:

I am in tears reading the links containing excerpts from Ezzo’s book. I just can’t believe it.

  10. Annie says:

Having these books in my possession, as long as I did, was the first time I really looked through the books. I honestly found it more horrific reading some of the book over the small excerpts that have been shared with me. I’m shocked that anyone could read it and think it worth while to do these things to kids- no, BABIES. I share your upset, Krista. It’s heartbreaking.

  11. Melitsa says:

I’d not seen or heard of this book before but reading a few paragraphs of the link you gave I’m soooooooooo glad you bought these books and took them out of the hands of vulnerable parents.

  12. hen says:

I checked out the links you gave for this book. My stomach turned at some of the disgusting tripe that idiot wrote. What human being could even consider this sort of rubbish suitable for the nurturing of ANY being, let a lone a human baby.

    Beggars belief. grrrrrrrrrrrr!

  13. Carolyn says:

YES! I am a librarian, and feel that book burning is in general, well, bad…but there’s nothing bad ENOUGH for these books! Wahoo!

  14. Annie says:

I’m with you on this Carolyn, normally I wouldn’t be a fan of book burning but this is has contributed to harming babies!
