I just had to title this post with the title of Rachelle Van Zanten’s incredible new single. Go listen to it here or in itunes! Right now 20 cents of each purchase goes towards youth conservation camps here in Northern BC.

Last month, Prince Rupert joined many communities around the province in holding a Defend Our Coast rally. It was overwhelming to hear how many people came out to all the different events! More than 250 people in Prince Rupert alone and roughly 5000 people went to the rally in Victoria. We gathered to show our opposition to preposterous and dangerous projects like the Northern Gateway Pipeline. We will defend our coast.

Attendees were natives, parents and children, seniors, teachers, students, fishermen, elected officials and plenty of your “average joes” who aren’t so easily categorised.

We were talking yesterday about Remembrance Day and how some veterans refused to wear their medals to their local cenotaph yesterday in protest of the poor treatment veterans get from our government. Veterans are often forgotten and ignored. It got me thinking about how un Canadian our current government is. Canadians are generally known for being friendly and polite, as well for our peace keeping skills and the aid we provide around the world. Our current government doesn’t take care of veterans. It doesn’t seem to care about many Canadians really- well except for the few that make money by plundering our land and our resources hastily and unsustainably. Frankly, most of the corporations that see favour from our Canadian Government aren’t even Canadian.

We can’t count on our current federal or provincial government to protect Canadian interests. Without a clean environment we will not have fish to eat, clean water to drink, clean air to breath. Any project that puts any of these in jeopardy should NOT even be considered. Obviously.

Except it’s not obvious- at least not to our current government.

Canadians need to stand up and protect our own interests.

Such gorgeous pictures! It’s really inspiring to see the way people in BC are mobilizing and speaking out. I’m actually running the national phone canvass for the GPC for the by-elections. Thanks for helping get the word out!

Inspiring- and reminds me of the fight against mountain top removal coal mining here in Kentucky….

  8. Annie says:

Ah, I wonder if that’s some of the “clean coal” I’ve been hearing about. :(
