I can never make enough daal to please my family. It’s easily one of our favourite meals! Cam, Lily and Leif have all walked by in the last few minutes and after noticing the image on my screen asked if I could add this meal to our weekly meal plan this week. I’m happy to because it’s a fast, easy and very delicious meal to make.

Daal

Daal

  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 4- 5 Lime Leaves, left whole or 8- 10 Curry Leaves, chopped
  • 1 tsp Garlic Chili Paste
  • 4- 5 Shallots, finely chopped
  • 4- 6 cloves Garlic, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1 tsp Coriander
  • a generous pinch or two of Asafoetida
  • 1 or 2 Tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup Red Lentils
  • 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
  • 3 cups Water
  • Green Onion or Cilantro and fresh Lemon Juice (optional garnishes)
  1. Heat a large pan on medium heat and add a tbsp or so of oil.
  2. Add the mustard and cumin seeds and stir once. Let them start to pop a little.
  3. Add the lime or curry leaves, garlic chili paste, shallots and garlic and cook stirring every few seconds until golden. Add a few drops of water if needed.
  4. Add and stir in the turmeric, coriander and asafoetida powders.
  5. Add the chopped tomato, mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes until soft and then add the lentils, salt and water.
  6. Cover and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Stir, taste and adjust seasonings and add water if the daal is too thick.
  8. Cook partially covered, for another 10 minutes or so until required consistency is achieved. You’re going for soft but not too mushy.
  9. Garnish with chopped green onion or cilantro and dash of lemon juice.
  10. Serve on quinoa or rice with naan bread.
