I know a lot of you live in places where it’s easy to come home from a day of thrifting with a handful of amazing treasures. It’s not so here with the one small thrift shop in town. It’s definitely not a treasure trove like any other thrift shop I’ve ever been in, so you may understand my exuberance when I saw this sewing machine!

My new Husqvarna!

Well, it wasn’t actually me that first saw it. I got a call from Cam at work who’d ridden by on his bike and seen this Husqvarna sewing machine in the window. He told me I should go by and have a look. Before hanging up I asked him what my limit should be on purchasing it. He suggested $200 and I much more sensibly suggested $35.

Cam’s not completely out of touch when it comes to what old or used sewing machines are worth. I already own a Hasqvarna sewing machine that my mother in law so generously gave me. Cam knows the value of this machine and what a workhorse it is.

My beloved Husky

So when I went to have a look I was immediately dispirited. This machine had a case, the manuals and all the original gear it came with, all in excellent condition. It was clearly going to cost more than my $35. The woman showing me into the display window area was sorry to tell me that it didn’t work. I found that hard to believe seeing it’s condition and guessed a part of the problem was they didn’t know how to work the Husqvarna machine which are notorious for being non intuitive. I asked her the price and she said $5.

SOLD.

Case

She seemed as glad as I was that I was taking this machine home, telling me she was worried she’d have to throw the machine out (!!) if it didn’t get sold before too long. She was surprised and happy that I already had a similar Husqvarna.

My new Husqvarna!

Turns out my machine is a slightly newer version of this new found one. I was right that a big part of the problem was that no one knew how to work the machine. It does need some work as it’s not picking up all it’s stitches but it runs really well. There’s a quilting shop in the next town over that specialises in Husqvarnas so we’ll see to servicing it the next time I’m passing through. This will make a great second machine for Lily and Leif to use.

My newest find!

eta. I photographed my manual and put it into a pdf for someone who found an old machine without the manual. I’m happy to share this pdf if you also need the manual for a Husqvarna 2000 model 6430. Just comment and let me know!

    Hi Annie,
my mother has got a Husqvarna 2000 SL 6460 which has not been in use for presumably decades and the stitch cams got lost a few years back when moving house. I intend to put it to use again so I would like to know whether there is anything I have to take into consideration. I hope that it will work without those cams. And do you know whether modern feet and such fit the older models?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi!
I do not know about sewing machines very much but first time i saw this one i knew that it got the wings. This is a life-time tool and i saved it from way to garbage. I was pleased to make my mother happy – it was nicely in case and everything. Only there was this but – some of the program caps and user manual was missing. I tried to find this manual but this is a 1971 year model… My mother veronica is a journalist – and she makes and creates all kind a handycraft, writes how to do it – people really likes it…
I’d really, really appreciate if you could send me the manual!
    Thank you so much!

Ji. It would be great to get the pdf for the Husk. 2000. My retirement project is acquiring older machines (bought out my own pocket, donated by friends, etc.), repairing them, & donating them to individuals or organizations (14 so far to 3 orgs. & 2 indiv.). I’ negotiating on a Husk. 2000 but need the manual.
    Thanks.

Not sure what to tell you, Deepak Datt. I think you’ll have to contact Husqvarna themselves to find out where to buy a belt for the machine. Good luck!

    Hi Annie,

I have just chanced upon a husqvarna 2000 6430 and it doesn’t have a user manual. I don’t really know anything about sewing machines so I can’t tell if all the parts are included. It does have about 7 different foot fittings and the system colourmatic knobs B,C,D,E,F. I’ve plugged it in and it seems to be alive but I’m not sure how to thread it up. Would it be possible to get a copy of the PDF you mention in your post?

    Look forward to your reply.

    Cheers

    Tash

    Hello,
I’m wondering if you could kindly send me the manual for the Husqvarna 2000? I’ve been using my mother’s old Husqvarna for the last 17 years without a manual. I’d really love how to know how to do more than straight and zigzag stitches! How wonderful you picked up a machine for a bargain price. Mine’s about 30 years old and is still in great condition (probably because I don’t know how use it properly).

    Best Regards,
    Tamara

    Dear Annie,
My husband wrote a letter on my behalf but he got the name wrong so here we go again. I started a sewing group in the retirement village where I live. We get together on Friday mornings, help each other with our sewing projects and do lots of chatting! Most of our equipment has been donated and one of the machines is a Husqvarna 2000. model 6430 but we have no instruction book and we would be very grateful if you would send me the pdf copy. I love the idea of people all over the world connecting through their interest in sewing. Thanks for taking the trouble.
    Regards,Cynthia.

Hi there. I have the husqvarna 2000 6430 and after a few years of it having a quiet life I have gotten a hairless Chinese crested dog who requires some serious outfits. My memory and my machine are refusing to buttonhole. I would love a PDF of the manual to save the day. Thanks, Melissa

  23. Carol Ann Trullard says:

My sister-in-law bought a Viking 6460. She tested the machine at the garage sale and it worked, however when she brought it home, it started sewing as soon as she plugged it in. She fiddled with dials and buttons and got it to stop but now the presser foot won’t come down all the way. I tried to get a manual on line for her but they want me to pay with Paypal and since I recently had my credit card hacked (through Paypal) I can’t take the chance. Are you familiar with the 6460 at all? Would the manual for the 6430 help her? Thanks for any help you can give us. Cat in SE Mich

    bonjour,
    Merci d’avance
