The Nanaimo Community Home Learners group usually does a craft before the weekly gym time. This week there was also a meeting in place for the parents. It was so great to meet more parents and the gym/playground was filled with kids that don’t always come on a regular basis. One of the parents put together the making of Hula Hoops this week. This craft was really fun! I thought I’d share how to do it:

There were a number of samples to try to find the right size for each hula hoop maker. Once we picked the size we liked the hose was cut to match. Next we fit a small corrugated connector in one end of the tube. This took some muscle to twist in and using the hairdryer to heat and expand the hose helped. Lily and Leif both put beads in her hose before I fit the second side of the hose onto the connector.

All that needed to be done then was to decorate! There were so many different colour combinations used. Lily opted for the simple pink hockey tape and red electrical tape.

Wallah!

These look great, I’d like to make one. Thanks for photographing the instructions too!

  3. That is so cool! I hula’d a bit at folk fest but I never thought of these being so easy to make. Do you have a photo of what the connector looks like or details on how to find the right kind of hose?

All the parts came from Canadian Tire. I don’t have a photo of the connector but I’m sure they wouldn’t be hard to find. They’re just grey tubes with some corrugated ribbing on each side. The woman who “hosted” the craft had actually bought a couple sizes of the tubing but the thicker one she bought wasn’t working as well.

Next time, I’d like to try water inside. That would be an interesting way to weight it. What I didn’t realise was how large of a hoop I actually needed to successfully hula hoop. I suppose it makes sense, but I hadn’t thought of it!
