I’m starting a garden this year after many years without our own space and moving often. With our own garden again, why not get Mason Bees as well? When it came time to order them though, I started to get worried that they wouldn’t do well with the cool, less sunny weather. With some assurances from some friends, we decided to at least give it a try.

Mason Bee

When the bees arrived with the kit, I realised the ice pack keeping the bees dormant was completely warm and two of the bees in a vial were awake and moving around. With the weather still cool and hardly any flowers in bloom I worried about their survival. We put them in the fridge for a couple days until finally seeing sun today. I set out one vial of bees today and we’ll put the others out in a little bit.

Freedom!

Our kit contained a cedar bee house with nesting trays and a protective front to keep out pests. We also got a helpful chart and a book about mason bees and pollination.

Enjoying some warm sun

Beautiful!

I love bees! It is great that you are treating them so nicely considering that there have been so many shortages this year. I hope your bees are happy in their new home!

What a cool idea! I was reading about mason bees last year but didn’t realize you could actually order kits. Can’t wait to hear more about how they do there.

  7. What a cute little bee face in the bottom photo. Bees are the best! Good for you for doing this!

Great photos! We’re just getting ready to set our bee house out into our new garden, and the bees are still snoozing in my fridge. I’ve been thinking about putting them out, but our weather has been too crazy lately. Maybe next week if we get a sunny stretch.
