EC Starter Kit Giveaway
I really believe in Elimination Communication (Diaper Free) and with so many friends pregnant at the moment I was inspired to do a giveaway for a starter kit. This kit will contain a potty and book about EC.

There are a number of choices for books in the above picture but I’d prefer to offer one of two books along with the potty. I was never a fan of Laurie Boucke’s book Infant Potty Training. Her books are a yawn and a half.
Ingrid Bauer’s Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene is by far my favourite book on the subject. She not only discusses and explains the practicalities of EC but offers a larger feel of natural parenting and living in general.
The book that I often recommend or buy for friends who may want a more mainstream approach to EC is The Diaper Free Baby by Christine Gross-Loh. This is a fantastic book for those first hearing about or new to EC. I like that it talks about part time EC in a way that encourages new parents to at least give it a try because it makes simple sense. This book shouldn’t scare anyone away.
If you’re interested in this giveaway, please let me know in the comments which book you would prefer.
Please let others know about the giveaway as well! The more people introduced to EC the better. Better for the environment and better for the connection between parent and child. Of course it’s also better for the not child not having to be left in soiled diapers! If you link to this giveaway on your blog or other, let me know and I’ll give you three times the chance to win!
- A Culture in Diapers :I laugh about this article. I came across it maybe 5 years ago and a year later I recognised the author as my fellow Freecycle moderator where I lived. An inspiring unschooling mother of now teenagers, I’ve enjoyed getting to know her.
- A mother’s story of starting with her 9 mo dd
- Article by Scott Noelle about starting diaperless EC during the toddler phase
- Decommissioning the Diaper
- 75 Benefits of Elimination Communication
- Tribal Baby’s thorough site on EC
This giveaway will be open until August 1st! Once someone is picked the starter kit will be sent from Contiuum Family here in BC. (You don’t have to be in Canada to enter.) I’m not sponsored by this wonderful company but I believe in their products and I just want to share with others!

on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:10 am:
I’m not entering, as I don’t need any of that, but I wanted to say how generous it is of you to do this! I could never not EC a kid now. Meredith is accident free before two, and we’ve never spent a day actually potty training her. How much easier could it get? I do know a couple of people who are pregnant that I am going to pass this on to though.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:16 am:
Hey thanks Lindsay. I’ve met so many people that don’t know where to get a good potty or can’t afford one or… I’ve been wanting to do this for a while! You know, you could always enter for a friend…
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:26 am:
Oh well if you don’t mind if I enter for a friend then I will enter! I agree with you that I like Ingrid Bauer’s book better but I think most of the friends I would give something like this too might appreciate The Diaper-Free Baby more so I’ll enter for that one.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:48 am:
I did try and do some EC with my older daughter. However, I was not faithful in doing so. I wish I would have been now, in that she is not potty trained and is sort of fighting to do so. I have a little one now and really want to try EC again, but don’t know where to start with someone this little. I would appreciate being entered into this contest!
I think I would like the book The Diaper Free Baby.
Thanks!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 11:17 am:
you’re awesome!!! i would love to enter this for my friend rebecca, expecting her first after many tries. she watched me do this with my two, but a little encouragement goes a long way! btw i heard ingrid bauer speak once in a small group in seattle, and she was so down-to-earth, i wished i could go spend a weekend with her family and absorb some of how they do what they do. it is so foreign to me (meaning, not the way i grew up or see people around me raising their families – it FEELS familiar…).
thank you!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 12:17 pm:
The diaper free baby would be my choice as I already have Ingrid’s. I would love to be able to share both with my sisters as I have 3 expecting and have had their interest tweaked with watching me with Ezra. I think it’s awesome that you are doing this
Thanks!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 12:55 pm:
Well, I tried EC-ing with the twins and well…I just couldn’t keep up, but a friend of mine is pregnant and I will talk to her about it. Oh, I’m not actually entering the contest, as I already have Ingrid Bauer’s book and can lend it to my friend, but I wondered if anyone had heard of any information related to Ec-ing with twins…I really would like to try again!.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 1:21 pm:
Hey Annie what a jolly nice thing of you to do!
I’ll pass this on to my pregnant friend. I’ve only got the Laurie Boucke book and I agree with you that it is an “exhaustive” volume on the subject!! I’ve fancied all the others but they were never top of my book-buying list….
We’re on a EC strike here again. M did a massive wee all down my back today. It went right into my jeans and soaked my knickers too, full clothing change required for me! Yet more washing to add to the heap.
Sarah x
PS We finally had a buddha bowl for tea…mmmmmm!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 3:23 pm:
Hi Annie,
it is wonderful that you are offering this giveaway!
I run the site Part Time Diaper Free – check it out! I hope you might add it to your recommended list up there!
I don’t need to win of course – I have the books and DVD’s already, LOL, but I will tweet and blog it for you in a few places on my net travels this morning.
Charndra
P.S I have some resources on overcoming the Potty Pause – which I will be adding to shortly (bit pressed right now as we are moving 1200kms across the country next week!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 4:10 pm:
Different strokes, my fave is the Infant Potty Training book. It seems more practical and down to earth to me. I’m not very crunchy.
There’s a new shorter version with color photos, really lovely. It has lots of medical reports that the other books you mentioned lack, and the cross-cultural info rocks!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 4:29 pm:
I learned about EC while I was pregnant at a coffee social that has monthly topics, I have read infant potty training and diaper free baby and would love the chance to read potty whispering! what a great thing you are doing!!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 5:12 pm:
Decommissioning the Diaper
what a great giveaway. thanks
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 6:02 pm:
I have Ingrid’s book and it is a little too crunchy granola for me. I would really like to try EC, but I need something that is written more towards mainstream parents, and parents who want to try part time EC.
My daughter is just 2 months old, and already cries just before a pee (she’s in cloth so I can’t miss it), so I think EC is a good option for us.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 6:19 pm:
I love this! My choice for book would be Diaper free Baby, or any book directed more towards an older baby- 6months +, etc.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 8:37 pm:
I would love to win this for my niece who will be turning the magical age to start potty training very soon!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:26 pm:
I’d love to enter! We are trying out EC with my 11 week old, and I would love to learn more about it. I would really like to read Gross Loh’s book.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:45 pm:
I would LOVE the diaper free baby so i can late start with my 10 month old, and show my friends ECers arent crazy, my daughter has taking to peeing everything i take her dipe off! all i need is a place to put her and the right information
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 9:51 pm:
Nice giveaway… too late for us, but would have been cool if I’d heard of all this before my 4 kids grew out of baby-hood! I would have very seriously looked into it. Feeling certainly *bummed* about putting 4 kids though disposables… oh well.
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 10:16 pm:
i would love to enter as i have been reading up on EC but i havn’t started yet but i plan to real soon this would help out a bunch. not sure witch book so any would work i guess the one you think is the best! Thank you so very much Sherrie!!!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 10:51 pm:
Ingrid Bauer’s Diaper Free!
I have two toddlers in diapers, and would love some help to help them learn to love the potty, from ‘like-minded’ folks. My 3 year old daughter is starting to learn but my 5 year old son is very attached to his diaper… so my hope is he’ll learn from her. It’s interesting to see how they handle having to go when they just have swim suits at the beach!
Cheers
PS. I just love seeing pics of Rupert! Looks like you love it!
on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 11:05 pm:
just shared on facebook, if that counts!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 5:53 am:
Diaper free thanks for offering mama, im starting the EC journey this will be a big help!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 6:34 am:
Sweet! I’d love to win this for my sister-in-law who is pregnant. I’ve told her about ec and she seemed open. If I can choose from all the books, I’d prefer a Laurie Boucke book (the new one if it’s on offer) because my SIL is a nurse and can better relate to Boucke’s writing style. Otherwise, my second choice would be the GrossLoh book. Thanks for doing this.
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 7:00 am:
I would love to win this for my pregnant friend! She is a big believer in EC, but generously gave away her things when her (she thought!) last baby, who is 5, got too big for them.
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 7:14 am:
Thanks for running this giveaway – very generous! I am a birth doula with an almost 2 year old, ECed from birth (STILL not graduated, but getting close) son, and I would like to enter this giveaway. I have yet to read the Christine Gross-Loh book, and I would love to add it to my lending library; my other two EC books are often on loan to interested clients. I have a client from Africa who JUST delivered her baby on Tuesday, and if I won, I would give her the potty as we already have two, and I know she would make use of it with her little girl!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 8:30 am:
I have ec’ed my babe for the last 6 months. I have a friend that wants to be on board with it but is just too scared of the whole process. I would love to give her the Diaper Free by Gross Loh to read over and encourage her to do it!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 8:42 am:
I would be interested in The Diaper Free Baby by Christine Gross-Loh. I’ve read just a little about EC and would like to learn more about it. I have one in diapers, and he’s just about to turn 1 year old.
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 9:16 am:
I would love to enter. EC is so important. I hope that many more people will grow to use it. It is such a kind and respectful way of life for babies and parents.
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 9:23 am:
I just blogged about this giveaway. Here’s the address:

on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 9:36 am:
Oh I am sorry I forgot to add which book: well I have been wanting to read Ingrid’s Diaper Free. : )
Thanks for hosting the giveaway.
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 12:39 pm:
EC rocks! I cannot imagine caring for a baby and _not_ EC-ing. My firstborn was in disposibles and potty trained at 19 months the “regular” American way. Babies #2,3 and 4 were all ECed and used cloth when not nakey butt. Potty-training my first born who wore disposibles was not hard or horrible. But ECing from birth with her younger brothers and sisters was SO MUCH more fun and part of a loving bonding experience. Once you start EC-ing, there is no going back!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 2:31 pm:
I would love to be entered in this contest! My baby girl is nearly a yeare old now, nut I wanted to give this info to some friends that are expecting. Though I may keep the potty for my girl, for when she is able to walk to the potty herself.
I have posted this webiste on my cloth diapering board! Give me 3 times more chances to win!!! Oh yeah!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 3:12 pm:
I’d love to be entered! We’re expecting our first any day now, and we want to try to catch some poops, at least. Mostly I just want to cut down on the number of poopy cloth diapers I’ll have to wash! I’d be most interested in Diaper Free!, I think. Thanks!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 3:26 pm:
this is such a wonderful idea i would love to try it
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 3:49 pm:
Yeah ec!
We did this with our second son.
What a journey, it really took continuum parenting to a new level.
Nice to see so many others embracing this concept.
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 4:38 pm:
I’d like to be entered & if I win, I’d like the book “The Diaper Free Baby.” Never done EC before & we are expecting our 6th child. Thanks for doing the giveaway!
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm:
I read both the Ingrid Bauer and Christine Gross-loh books, and I’d recommend the second one for parents starting out. The ingrid bauer one is beautifully written but at the time (I was just starting EC with DS) I found it a bit “obscure” for the practical side of ECing, and she also doesn’t mention the different phases babies go through!
If anyone’s interested, I started making Ec pants a few months ago: pioupioukids.etsy.com
on Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 7:46 pm:
We are late-starters and I just want to encourage anyone who feels like they want to try, it’s not too late
! We started at 6 months and by 9 months she is regularly peeing and pooping in her potty! We still have lots of wet diapers because I only part-time EC and she’s not signing and her signals aren’t always clear so I have to rely on timing
. Someone was right when they said: “Once you start EC, you can’t go back”.
I would like Christine’s book, as I’ve already read Ingrid Bauer’s.
Thanks for hosting such a cool giveaway!
on Saturday, July 18th, 2009 at 12:21 am:
hi! I like your blog very much, I saw at mdc, about the give away and here I am again! My ds 2 is now 7 mo and we parttime EC, but I want to take it a step further, but it is not so common here, in the Netherlands. It is mostly windy, rainy and cold
and we live in an appartment building, so outside nakeytime? ..

I would like to read Ingrid Bauer’s Diaper Free! ‘s book, the first one you mentioned, I really like to be more of a natural mom
TIA!

I have Diaper Free by Ingrid Bauer and have lent my copy out to several new moms now. I have a 5 month old and EC has been fantastic with her! It has become second nature for us. I would love to be entered for the EC starter kit. Great idea, thanks for doing this.

I could really use the potty mine leaks and is really gross
on Monday, July 20th, 2009 at 9:17 am:
I am a new mom (6 month old girl) and would love to start reading up on being diaper free and potty training so that I am ready when the time comes (the sooner the better!).
I think the best book for us would be The Diaper Free Baby.
on Monday, July 20th, 2009 at 11:17 am:
Thanks for the links here as well.. spent a lot of time reading them! My first baby is due in November and I would really love to try EC. I’ve known what it is but I hadn’t yet started to properly research it, though now I am going to start! The Diaper Free Baby looks like a great book!
on Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 at 5:27 am:
I have been considering EC lately and this would get me and my husband motivated. If I won I would want the book The Diaper Free Baby. I am also going to link to this contest on my blog.
Thank you for this contest!
on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 at 11:26 am:
I would love to be entered into this contest!
We are currently trying to potty train our 2-year old and it has been SUCH a hassle that I’ve decided to potty train our 3 week old NOW instead of waiting until he’s a stubborn 2 yr-old!
I’ve been crouching over the toilet with him (I can’t seem to figure out how to get him to “aim” so it goes everywhere) but a little toilet would make it soooo much easier on my back! Any extra information I can get on the whole process would be wonderful!
And who knows…maybe I’ll be able to convince my prego sister to try this too!
on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 am:
Oh, and if I won I’d prefer The Diaper Free Baby. Thanks!
on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 at 5:37 pm:
Diaper Free Baby (Bauer) would be my choice.
Thank you!
on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009 at 8:02 pm:
I found your site recently and enjoyed your birth story while expecting my first home born child (arrived 2 weeks ago). My midwife made an offhand remark about it being a great time of year for a diaper free baby, which I hadn’t been considering but remembered seeing as a sidebar on your site. So . . . 2 weeks later and I think we’ve had more catches than not. His 2 older brothers love to let me know when they think he is “communicating” (and when I’m dipping his bum in a puddle). We picked up some books from the library today and already have a potty but I just wanted to say thanks!
on Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 am:
I am entering for my friend. I love the Diaper Free! book and want to share it. Thanks for the great idea and offer.

I would like the Diaper Free Baby book.
Thanks!

on Friday, July 24th, 2009 at 9:43 am:
I’m pregnant with my 4th and we stopped cloth diapering after one child got rashes REALLY bad. I would love to try EC, but don’t know a whole lot about it.
Thanks for the great blog – we live in KY but grew up in western Washington; all your beautiful photos make me miss the area so much!
on Friday, July 24th, 2009 at 9:44 am:
Blast. Forgot this part. And if I win it, I’d like Bauer’s Diaper Free book.
on Friday, July 24th, 2009 at 11:11 am:
This is really nice of you to offer. I was told about this with my first daughter, but was clueless how to approach this. She was potty-trained by 3, through many tears and much stress. My 2 1/2 yo daughter is now in the potty-training stage because I still had no clue how to go diaper free with her. I admire you for your willingness to share this great approach and provide a starter kit.
on Friday, July 24th, 2009 at 11:23 am:
I am interested in this very much! It doesn’t really matter to me which book you include since I am very new to all this. Thanks.

Oh, I am so excited to hear about this giveaway. I was just about to start EC (again) with my 2nd daughter. I would be interested in the Diaper Free Baby. I have only read the book you mentioned that produced yawns

I have a 3 year old EC graduate and am expecting another child in January. I’m a little scared to do this again! I didn’t EC with my 5 year old, but watching her little sister helped encourage her to use the potty, and she was potty trained fairly early (by today’s standards).
I haven’t read Ingred Bauer’s book and would love a chance to win it! Thanks so much for this giveaway!
on Friday, July 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pm:
What a generous giveaway! I didn’t hear about EC until after I had potty trainined my first; we started when she was 18 mo and she was daytime trained at 26 months. It took quite a while because I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I’d really like to learn more about EC so that I can use it with my second baby, who is now 6 months. If I win I would like The Diaper Free Baby book. Thanks!
on Saturday, July 25th, 2009 at 4:29 pm:
Hi, I would like to enter the giveaway, the book I am interested in is probably Ingrid Bauer’s Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene. I am taking every oppourtunity to turn our family of 7 down the path of healthier living in all areas of our lives. I figure the earlier the better, so I’m trying very hard with our 8 mth old before he is experienced and conditioned to unhealthy ways. Thank you for such an opportunity here!

Hi, I would like to enter for the set. I would be the most interested in the diaper free baby. Wow would it save some money to not have to buy diapers!

If I win, I would like The Diaper Free Baby by Christine Gross-Loh.
Thank you for an awesome giveaway!
on Monday, July 27th, 2009 at 11:49 am:
Hi, I heard about the giveaway also from Molly Green. We are trying for our second child, and I never heard of EC. I will follow up on your links big time! Makes sense to me as one who grew up military overseas.
If I win, I certainly would take your advice on whatever is best for someone new to the subject, especially if any are more helpful to city living.
Thanks for the information and opportunity!

I would love to read the Ingrid Bauer book. Thanks for the giveaway!
on Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 at 1:33 pm:
I would be interested in this. My friend Liz is doing it and it seems like a good idea. As a grad student and a person with a busy life I have no idea which book would be better but I will let you pick to your best judgement. EC could work perhaps for us but if it doesn’t I promise to hand it down to someone who will be committed to it.

This is great Annie, as we are expecting our second and attempting early training now (by today’s standards) with an EC focus (according to some friends who EC). Anyway, I have the Diaper free book, so I guess the Diaper Free Baby one.

Hi! I would like to enter for The Diaper Free Baby book please. I have a couple of families that I know who do this method, but they live far away; and I am definitely intrigued. It was a big struggle getting my eldest daughter potty trained, and now I am seriously considering EC for my next. Thanks for having this contest and spreading the word!

on Saturday, August 1st, 2009 at 9:22 am:
have been introduced to EC from my hippy(er) friend before our little iris was born & we’re both so happy that we were – it is such a great way of understanding your baby & her needs not to mention a reduction in cleaning of nappies! (though we have had lots of poo, wee & sick on us – which we’re so used to it seems weird when we used disposables on a trip!)….. would be great to win a little potty & any book that wasn’t Ingrid’s (as i’ve read it already)
on Saturday, August 1st, 2009 at 10:12 am:
I would enjoy reading The Diaper Free Baby so that I could pass on a less overwhelming book for my more mainstream friends!
kind regards!

Hello there,
Just wanted to say how wonderful an initiative this is.
I’m pregnant with my first child and when I heard about EC I thought it sounded so great, so I looked into it. I just finished reading Gross-Loh’s book and I think it’s wonderful – I can’t wait to give EC a try when my baby is born.
If I get picked for the giveaway, I would like to check out Bauer’s book.
Congrats on a great initiative! I’ll post this link in my FB account for those who are interested in finding out more about EC.
