I finally came up with a solution to the way my sewing table was set up. It was in the alcove of our bedroom and the space itself was nice but it never worked for/with my kids. There were a few toys in Lily’s bedroom nextdoor like a doll house and playmobil but Leif never wanted to venture in there for very long. It made my sewing time quite short and definitely hurried.

After taking apart the room of bed (two doubles and Lily’s single) that we made for Paxye and her family for their stay, we went ahead and put Lily’s bed in the alcove that was my sewing space and turned her room into my sewing room. A possible advantage to this setup is Lily may be more willing and comfortable sleeping in her bed when it’s in the same room as us, especially during the upcoming cold winter.

I was hesitant about making this change because I wasn’t too keen on Lily and friend’s going up and playing in our bedroom or my sewing room if they were over playing. I’ll just have to figure this out when the time comes.

I’ve already revelled in the new change, having caught up on all my mending (dolls and their arms, clothing etc), sewed a baby sling for an expecting friend, worked on a raw silk skirt I’d been meaning to finish and am now working on Lily’s purple taffeta gown that she’s been wanting. She calls it her “Kaylee dress”. I’ll post photos when it’s done! Once I get my hands on some wool batting I’ll be able to finish my water themed quilt too!

A few quick shots:

Lily made her own bed this morning which makes me chuckle because I’m not one to make the bed everyday. I don’t know where she got the practice from but she’s eager each morning to do it. That’s an under the sea silk canopy over her bed. I need to make a bed skirt so you don’t see the mattress.

And I need to put a picture up on the wall at the foot of the bed. Our king sized bed is in the other part of the bedroom. I should have snapped a shot of it too.

Warning: I didn’t tidy at all for these photos and I’m still getting moved in and set up. These pictures are also quite a bit flashy and weird. That’s what you get with a plain old point and shoot! Ah well, I’m still glad to share the pictures.

Wow, what a transformation! I loved that little alcove and it looks like it was made for Lily’s bed. I’m sure she’s loving it too. Does this mean the cubbies will be for sewing now or are you going to have some toys for the kids to play with in there too?

I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my sewing room too. I’m not keen on spending much time in there anymore but when we had an office/craft room at the old house it would drive me crazy that I always had to share the space.

I can’t wait to see your new raw silk skirt but I’m curious which one this will be. I remember one you were working on at Fort Steele – it inspired me to make my first skirt and start building up a collection of bias cut skirts. Could it be the same one?

    Thanks for sharing!

It’s so much better in person! The drawers in the new sewing room weren’t ever for Lily’s things since she has the dresser that belonged to Cam’s Grannie. Some drawers hold bed linens and many were empty so they will hold some fabric and other things. The top drawers actually flap open downwards (did you see that before?) so in the left one I put my patterns and on the right I put my commonly used tools like the stitch dials for my machine, pins, needles, scissors and the like.

I’d like to keep the toy sitch to a minimum so we don’t have too much cluttered up there. I put the futon in the other corner folded in half as a sort of couch and re set up the tv/vcr/dvd player in the corner. We still don’t watch it hardly at all but it will be nice if we want to. Cam wouldn’t let me give it away for good, “just in case we wanted to use it again”. Yeah, right, I hate that thing. I’ve started downloading the Planet Earth series so it will be nice to see on the screen bigger than my laptop. I hear you on sharing space. I’d hate it if an office space was in there too.

This is a different skirt but same material. Gorgeous browny green. It’s also the same style but changed it somewhat. So now I’ll have two! I do love them.

I need to see them both then. Hint, hint. Yeah, I remember the drawers – when Lily showed them off they were mostly empty but she talked of putting her things in them. With your simple living style I didn’t expect there to be much to go in there. It’s so hard to not have a stash when it comes to sewing though!

I thought I had a real fabric stash until I met some people online who have REAL fabric stashes- like whole rooms filled with fabric!! That dresser I put in the sewing room has fabric in it. I mostly collect for quilting and for specific projects but I do have a few pieces just because I loved them.

You’re far better than I! I like to go “shopping” in my craft closet when getting ready for Christmas. I have a good collection of fabric but nothing like what you’re mentioning. I also share the closet with knitting stuff and office/paper craft supplies. I haven’t knit anything in almost a year so I might need to purge soon.

I’ve done so much less creating in this house but I think it’s mostly related to those bloody boring pattern drafting courses I was taking. They were so frustrating and sapped alot of my energy and desire to make. I’m hoping that will change with my pottery classes this fall. I would love to actually finish the projects I earmarked fabric for!

My knitting is oddly stuffed (somewhat) on top of the books on my bookcase downstairs. It’s all on hold until Leif will give up trying to pull my projects apart while I’m working on them. I still have a hat on the go for myself and one waiting to be started for Paxye.

You- pattern drafting course?? You don’t need that. You’ve already successfully sewn so much with patterns! It’s no wonder the course was dead boring!

Okay, Leif just smashed his head into the kitchen counter AGAIN this morning. Have to go help him. Poor baby.

Just found your blog and am loving it – thanks! I especially like hearing about what you cook. Good inspiration for my weekly menu planning sessions!

Had to laugh when I saw this post about your daughter’s bed and your new sewing room. My daughter has the same Ikea duvet cover, and also a visible box spring under her mattress. I’ve been saying I’d sew a dust ruffle for it for ages, and haven’t gotten around to it yet. Sigh.

My knitting projects are also stuffed on top of my books on the bookshelf!

I’ll be back to read your blog regularly – thanks.
