Woo Gave Me Cooties!

ACK! Woo from fantastically funny Three Woofs and a Woo gave me cooties… well, a cootie catcher at least.

3WAAW Cootie Catcher

Lily’s enjoying it so much, we thought we’d make a few more. It’s been years since I made one of these and I’m pretty sure we never called them Cootie Catchers but google the name and you’ll find a number of sites offering instructions. I thought I share some quick instructions here, in case it’s been 15+ years for you too since you made them.

  1. Fold a square piece of paper in half. Open it and fold it in half the other way.
  2. Cootie Catcher

  3. Take each corner of the square and fold them into the center.

  5. Keeping the folds in place, turn the paper over and again fold each corner into the center of the square.

  7. Repeat step 1 and fold the square in half and then again the other way to re crease the folds. You can now carefully slip your fingers in under the four corners underneath.

  9. Once you have the finished shape of the cootie catcher, you can go back and write on it. (Click on the next picture to see the whole photo sequence bigger.)
  10. Cootie Catcher

We added the colours red, blue, green and orange to the top four squares. Inside we numbered the triangles 1 through 8 and under the numbers we wrote funny statements and fun instructions for the player to follow like “cluck like a chicken” or “stand on one foot”.

Cootie Catcher

There are so many ways to play with the cootie catcher. Perhaps the most obvious is to use it as way to determine a secret admirer with the names of possible candidates written under the numbers. It can be used to predict fortunes or be a way to spread some love with positive messages. The possibilities are endless.

Kusudama Flowers

A quick google search will show you different variations of this beautiful folded flower. This craft happened to be one offered to members at our local museum this past week. Out of all the fun crafts we did, this was my favourite!

Kusudama Flowers

All you need is 5 post-it-notes or 5 squares of paper and white glue.

  1. Fold the bottom corner to the top. This will make a triangle.
  2. Kusudama Flower 1

  3. Fold the left and right corners up to the middle corner. This will make a square.
  4. Kusudama Flower 2

  5. Fold open and flatten the folded up sides. With post-it-notes there will be a sticky side. You may want to use a skewer to help unstick it as you open the folds.
  6. Kusudama Flower 3

  7. Fold the top of the triangles towards you so they are level with the edges of the paper.
  8. Kusudama Flower 4

  9. Fold the triangles on the sides in on themselves.
  10. Kusudama Flower 5

  11. Glue the two folded sides together. You will probably have to hold it until the glue dries a bit. Don’t worry if the petals look a bit “flat”. Once the seams are dry you can push them a bit more round and open.
  12. Pinching the petal while glue dries

  13. When the petals are dry you now glue them together to make a the flower. I like to glue three together and then two and once they are mostly dry, glue them all together.
  14. Glueing one petal to another

  15. Repeat with the 4 other post-it-notes

Enjoy!
